Yes folks…you read that right!…As promised, here is another SP hockey fact for you!!!…
SAL PIAMONTE HOCKEY FACT #3:
Well…when I was thinking what fact I would add here for my third installment of SP Hockey Facts, I decided to share an old junior story when I was playing defense for the Smiths Falls Bears Jr. A Hockey Team of the CJHL. After watching and reading about the hockey highlights of last nights games, I watched as Tampa Bay honoured former captain Vinny LeCavalier before the Philadephia-Tampa game. As i watched, I couldn’t help but feel that much of Vinny’s success was also as a result of the significant contributions of NHL superstar Marty St. Louis…and so, in honour of him, I shall make him the focus of my latest fact!
…it was a cold winter day in Hawkesbury, and my team, the Bears, were playing against the Hawks. Those games were always tight and intense, and the style and pace of the games we played against each other changed dramatically from their larger and more spacious ice surface, to ours, which was the old barn-home to permanent residents, “Whiskey Row,” and a slew of other long time Smiths Falls fixtures. When we played the Hawkes in their rink, my job was to be out on the ice every time the “Smurf” line, as they were affectionately referred to, was on. Let me explain…Hawkesbury’s uniforms were blue, and both Martin St. Louis & his linemate and best buddy, Eric Perrin, were not the tallest, but very sturdy, speedy, and persistent players who buzzed all over the ice, every single shift. As my game was more offensive and built around my skating, the coaches wanted me out against the Smurfs, and let me tell you…that was no easy task. I mean, I thought I was already logging a lot of ice time, but try matching up against those guys for 60 minutes…TOTAL NIGHTMARE!!!!…even on my most rested days, they would still manage to find themselves on the scorecard, whether they won or lost…and all in all, when those games ended, I never once thought of “The Smurfs” in happy terms!!!…from my best recollection, those 2 were always 1-2 in league scoring…
For those of you who are fans of St. Louis & Perrin, childhood friends who, from what I heard, played together on the same line since they learned how to skate, you’d be amazed to know that they both ended up at the University of Vermont, where again, they lit up the league while playing on the same line….unbelievable!…Now, many years later, and my CJHL career far behind me, I brag about those memories to my boys in the Sarsfield Oldtimers Hockey League in Navan, Ontario…where, as you can imagine, I get razzed for clinging on to & talking about “the good ol’ days” after my Beer league hockey losses….which, I am told, I am doing to compensate for my lack of production!!! haha
More hockey facts comin’ up and thanks to everyone for supporting my hockey song, “LAY IT ON THE LINE!”…PLZ KEEP IT UP AND CONTINUE TO SHARE WITH ANYONE….AND EVERYONE YOU KNOW!!!
